The Albin/Juliars in South Africa

The Greenmarket, Cape Town

The Greenmarket in downtown Cape Town is a one-block square of temporary stalls where you can buy necklaces, masks, figurines, bowls, baskets, T-shirts, dresses, batiks, wooden carvings, and very few pieces of pottery, oddly enough. Most of what you see in one booth is also available in the third one down on the right at the same price. Most of the stuff is from cottage industry arts-and-crafts centers through the country and nearby countries, like Zimbabwe.

Ostrich eggs. The holes? Well, you've got to empty them out somehow or they begin to stink. They're very high in cholesterol and one egg is as big as a couple of dozen chicken eggs. And they're so strong you can stand on one. Now how do the ostrich chicks get out?

Township art. The artists use aluminum soda cans as part of the construction/painting of their works. Sometimes the cans appear as part of a building, sometimes as an advertising sign.
